Make your own gray glass palette

A gray glass palette is very practical. It’s easy to clean and it’s much easier to judge colors/values than on a white palette.

Below you see an example. The same colors look totally different on a gray palette. The gray palette is more neutral and when a color is light, you can clearly see it.

It’s easy to make one yourself! In the video at the end of this page I show how you can do this, but you can read on of course.

These are the materials you’ll need:

  • piece of glass in a preferred size
  • glass cleaner
  • paper towel
  • duct tape
  • wide brush or spalter
  • acrylic paint: black and white
  • palette and palette knife

Buy a piece of glass in a preferred size. Mind the edges, if they aren’t rounded, they can be very sharp. You can also use a piece of glass from an old picture frame.

Clean the glass at both sides with glass cleaner and paper towel.

Make a mixture of white and black paint.

Take a wide brush or spalter and cover one side of the glass with the gray mixture. Use a lot of paint and just cover the entire plate quickly.

Leave the glass plate to dry for at least 24 hours.

The next day you can put strokes of duct tape on the painted side of the glass. Let the strips protrude over all edges and put the strips next to each other, until you’ve covered the whole plate.

Put duct tape at the painted side

Fold the protruding tape around the edges. This way, the edges of the palette are protected. Also, if you have a glass plate with sharp edges, the tape prevents you from cutting yourself.

Add at least one extra layer of tape in the opposite direction.

And now enjoy mixing and painting!
